Badminton players compete in a fast game of highly concentrated action which demands running, jumping, twisting, lunging, acute hand-eye coordination and rapid reflexes. Shuttles travelling at speeds in excess of 180mph have been recorded – faster than the fastest tennis serve. These can occur regularly during rallies at the top level of the game, where there are often 40 or 50 shots in 20 seconds. In a typical match the athletes run more than one mile, covering every inch of the court.
Physiologically, elite badminton players rely heavily on anaerobic systems for bursts of strength and speed, while significant aerobic capacity is highly advantageous for recovery and stamina.
